As a science and math teacher for at-risk kids, "Mr. S" was always explaining his name (Polish) and his height (6'6"=2 meters). As a former microbiologist, Matt combines his love of science with gift of teaching to all things two-wheeled. Here at Solfun, we've all watched and learned new ways to teach our guests bike skills thanks to Matt's unique and powerful teaching style. He's been riding bikes for over 45 years (awesome!) and plans to keep it that way. Matt's first bike was stripped-down, rattle canned purple Huffy which he rode through the woods and fields of his hometown Taylor, Michigan... it was his first mountain bike. Matt's bicycles of today bear no resemblance to that purple Huffy of old, but his passion for riding hasn't changed. He loves having the opportunity to share this passion with fellow cyclists; whether it's helping boost riding skills and confidence, making mechanical adjustments to improve and ease the ride, or just giving encouragement. It all comes back to science and teaching... and having fun.

Dave is mountain biking personified and to top it off, he has more heart and entertainment to offer out of anyone in this small town of Moab. He's one of the best bike handling teachers we've seen, and will have you smiling the entire time you're out here. Dave makes beginning mountain biking easy and fun... and he'll ratchet up the skills of an already advanced rider. A fun quote of his: "My bike is my desk, my Camelback is my briffcase, Moab's trails are my office." -Dave Loner

Kat, a Seattle native, has been on the road searching for adventure and found it in Moab. When she's not on her bike or taking pictures, Kat likes to slow down and flow through yoga poses. She's an incredibly talented rider in both ability and fitness, and is an excellent communicator/listener. Prior to Moab, she was a cross country ski guide in Steamboat Springs where she honed her ability to verbalize athletic technique. Kathy is all about her guests and has a great sense of humor.

Joe Smith - Solfun Bike Tour Guide

joe_1

You might say that Joe Smith IV was born to be a Moab bike tour guide - he's been guiding his entire adult life. He earned his stripes as a climbing & canyoneering guide and continues to pursue that along with leading tours on Moab bike trails. Joe is a natural communicator - a charming and sincere guy - who makes it easy to learn and improve your mountain biking skills.  Joe knows where he's going, never promises more than he can deliver on one of Solfun's mountain bike tours and he almost always overdelivers! A lot of Joe rubs off on his son, Joseph, who's also a climber, mountain biker and charmer. We know you'll like Joe Smith as much as we do.

Few people know Moab trails better than Denver native, Allan Poertner, riding hard in Moab since 1988, founding Solfun with his wife, Pat, in 2002. In on the Moab bike tour business since its inception, he's developed unique and effective techniques to teach mountain bike riding. His style of communicating conveys his passion for bringing people together with his loves of Moab, mountain biking, and having the maximum fun life can offer. He adores his lovely wife and partner, Pat, and their son, Mark. When Allan's not planning or leading Moab bike tours he enjoys art, biographies, ripping on his snowboard in the off-season, and he enjoys a cold bevy after a long day on one of Solfun's Moab bike tours.  If you're a skier, Allan loves to talk about his years as a USSA Freestyle Skier competing in moguls and aerials.  His son was a world cup skier on the US Freestyle Ski Team.  Allan says he taught him everything he knows!  He's is a Moab gem who lives to ride, rides to live.
