Originally from Morrison Colorado, Chris grew up with mountains in his backyard. Chris started mountain biking at a young age and hasn’t looked back! During his time at Western State Colorado University Chris represented his school on the downhill bike racing team. After being coached by world cup racers he gained the knowledge and experience to help improve your riding style. During the off season you can find Chris working for the Mt. Crested Butte Ski Patrol, or guiding on the Taylor River in Almont, Colorado. Chris has a strong passion for guiding and seeks to make the outdoors his permanent office space. Along with guiding, Chris helps out with all of Solfun’s social networking and sales so if you have any awesome pictures after our ride together send them his way! Along with Chris’ ability to guide and teach, he is very personable and will make you feel right at home.
Phil Wichman, aka “Philderness Phil”
Phil, or Philderness as his friends call him, is a small town Ohio native who always had a yearning for the next big adventure. He found his way into backpacking, rock climbing and his true passion of mountain biking.
During the cold Ohio winters you could find Phil leading spin classes to stay in shape and fine tune his coaching skills. During the warmer months he rocked and rolled all across the technical, rough, muddy and extremely rocky trails of the Northeast. (This may have been when he decided Moab was better!)
Phil’s skills coaching expertise will make your ride fun and exciting. You’ll share his passion for the outdoors and biking as you ride the mystical trails of Moab together.
Philderness is not limited to the biking world; he bowled a perfect 300 game and is waiting for the majors to call him up for his chance at the PBA championship.
Dave is mountain biking personified and to top it off, he has more heart and entertainment to offer out of anyone in this small town of Moab. He’s one of the best bike handling teachers we’ve seen, and will have you smiling the entire time you’re out here. Dave makes beginning mountain biking easy and fun… and he’ll ratchet up the skills of an already advanced rider. A fun quote of his: “My bike is my desk, my Camelback is my briefcase, Moab’s trails are my office.” -Dave Loner
Few people know Moab trails better than Denver native, Allan Poertner, riding hard in Moab since 1988, founding Solfun with his wife, Pat, in 2002. In on the Moab bike tour business since its inception, he’s developed unique and effective techniques to teach mountain bike riding. His style of communicating conveys his passion for bringing people together with his loves of Moab, mountain biking, and having the maximum fun life can offer. He adores his lovely wife and partner, Pat, and their son, Mark. When Allan’s not planning or leading Moab bike tours he enjoys art, biographies, ripping on his snowboard in the off-season, and he enjoys a cold bevy after a long day on one of Solfun’s Moab bike tours. If you’re a skier, Allan loves to talk about his years as a USSA Freestyle Skier competing in moguls and aerials. His son was a world cup skier on the US Freestyle Ski Team. Allan says he taught him everything he knows! He’s is a Moab gem who lives to ride, rides to live.
Mike “Esty” Esteson
Mike “Esty” Estenson is a 16 year native of Moab who originates from Montana and Colorado. He is an 8th grade math teacher in Moab by profession, but uses his time off to continue his passion for guiding mountain bikes. At the Middle School, Mike also coaches the mountain bike club and helps students gain riding confidence and improve their skills. This translates directly into coaching guests on their techniques which helps them make that next jump or two up in their ability and confidence. For 21 years he was a Colorado River guide and has traded in a paddle for pedals. He loves seeing guests enjoy the numerous trails around Moab and hopes they fall in love with the area like he has. Not only will he take you on a ride, but he will also teach you all the aspects of the gorgeous and amazing environment around you. With knowledge of the geology, botany, natural history, and human history of the Colorado Plateau, he will enrich your adventure to the Moab area. When not on the trails or in the classroom, Esty is teaching his 8-year-old daughter to ride on the more mellow trails around Moab.
